Trevor Allan is currently the Head of Student Equity and Welfare Services at the University of Western Sydney. He was the Director of the Disability Services Centre (DSC) at the ANU from 1999 to 2007. During this period, the level of demand for DSC services grew by over 500%, there has been significant technological and legislative changes and the complexity of the role has increased substantially. Despite this, Trevor and the DSC were leaders in the field of Disability services in Higher Education and the DSC at the ANU is seen as an example of best practice.
Trevor has championed the cause of independent and universal access for people with disabilities, has led the implementation of technological change and innovation (such as being the first university to integrate a full suite of Assistive Technology software into the standard student InfoCommons image) and developed a professional, credible and thorough approach to the provision of disability services and advice.
Effective and co-operative working relationships have been established with other university divisions such as Facilities and Services, the Division of Information, Academic areas and Student and University Administration.
Trevor chaired the Steering Committee to establish the first Professional Association of Disability Practitioners in Tertiary Education (Disability Education Association of NSW (DEAN) Inc.) and was Chair of the DEAN Management Committee for its first 3 years. He has drafted a Practitioner Accreditation protocol, led the establishment of a system of regular Professional Development as well as establishing a sound governance and financial basis for the organisation.
Feedback from DSC clients has also been very positive. In the 2005 Online Survey of DSC clients 91% of respondents rated the quality of DSC services as "Good" or "Very Good," 94.2% felt DSC services were appropriate and 95.6% rated DSC staff attitude as "Good" or "Very Good."
The respect and esteem with which Trevor is held both nationally and internationally is indicated by the number of invitations to present at conferences and seminars, including several keynote presentations. He has also been visited and consulted by many Australian and International colleagues as an example of excellence in the field. He has served on Government funding Committees, Consultative and Advisory groups, Conference and Seminar organising committees with distinction.
He was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Career Achievement at the 2006 ANU Staff Excellence Awards.
The DSC has been visited regularly by colleagues from China (including Zhai Hongxiang
(Vice Mayor, Beijing and the Beijing Disabled Persons Federation), Japan (Secretary-General & Executive Director Japanese Association on Higher Education & Disability), United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Thailand and Myanmar.Disability Community Consultative Committee, Dubbo, 2002
